HELLO, AND WELCOME to another edition of The Monitor, WIRED’s roundup of all things pop culture. What’s happening this week? Well, for one, there might be a new He-Man. For another, Christopher Nolan is staffing up for his next picture. And finally, the Mouse House just added a Fox. Let’s get started.
Disney Completes Its Acquisition of Fox
After much hoopla, Disney has finally closed its $71.3 billion deal to acquire much of 21st Century Fox. The acquisition gives Disney all of Fox’s film and TV studio, National Geographic, FX networks, India’s TV outfit Star India, and Fox’s 30 percent stake in Hulu. It also creates what The Hollywood Reporter calls “a box office Death Star,” giving the Mouse House reign over the Avatar and Kingsman franchises and bringing the X-Men into the Marvel Studios fold.
This Guy Might Be the Next He-Man
Noah Centineo, the Mark Ruffalo doppelgänger from Netflix’s To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, is currently the frontrunner to play He-Man in the forthcoming Masters of the Universe movie. The reboot of the 1980s animated show is being directed by brothers Adam and Aaron Nee and is scheduled to hit theaters … sometime. Seems only right that Centineo would get He-Man if Ruffalo got the Hulk.
